Talent Gap of 25 Million Project Managers by 2030, PMI Report Says!
by Jim Gabalski, VP, Sales and Marketing
|
|
I am an avid LinkedIn user and I follow the Project Management Institute and Joe Cahill, Chief Customer Officer of PMI. His posts are always terrific, but a recent one that really caught my attention since it relates to training demand was a post from the summer in which he did an interview with PM World Journal. While I knew that the demand for Certified Project Managers was significant, I have to admit that I was a little shocked to learn HOW significant.
In June of 2021, PMI released the Talent Gap Report 2021 which Joe spoke to in his interview. The report highlights some compelling statistics surrounding the demand for Project Management Professionals:
-
Between 2019 – 2030, the total employment of Project Management Professionals is expected to increase from 90M to 102M globally.
-
That translates into demand for 25M new Project Managers by 2030 with 12M openings driven by demand growth and 13M from retirements.
-
The leading market sectors that are driving the demand are: Information & Publishing (15.2% increase), Finance and Insurance (14.9% increase), and Manufacturing & Construction (13.2% increase).
-
The demand is global with China and South Asia leading the growth in demand; Europe, North America, South America, and MENA accounting for over 450,000 job openings annually.
-
The average salary for project management-oriented employment (PMOE) occupations in the United States is $111,399.
The Project Management Institute offers several certifications that prepare professionals for project management-oriented employment. These include Disciplined Agile®, the industry-leading process decision tool kit that describes how agile software development, DevOps, value streams, and business teams work together, PMI Citizen Developer™, which introduces the profession to citizen development—the ability to create applications using no- and low-code platforms—and best practices in citizen development methodology, and Project Management Professional (PMP)®, the world’s leading project management certification.
The project management profession is clearly expanding and that creates tremendous demand for high quality training and certification preparation. Learn more about becoming a PMI Authorized Training Provider!

Offer Training That Matches Your PM Student Needs
by Jim Gabalski, VP, Sales and Marketing
|
|
The career path for a Project Management Professional is long with skills being built on every step of the career ladder. The training that a person with 20 years of experience needs is quite a bit different than the training a person with 2 years’ needs. Selling the right project management training really requires an understanding of where your student is on the career path.
Here is a simple guide that will help you get started:
-
A non-project management professional that is being asked to manage projects: We can assume that this person has little to no formal training but is likely being identified as a project leader because they are exceptionally organized. While good organization skills are important, this person needs a little structure to begin setting up a project plan. Here are a couple of options: A dedicated project management professional with no certification: This person will need to gain experience and higher-level training along with certification to demonstrate expertise. Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® Certification, is a good place to start. For a person at any stage in their career who is taking on formal project management responsibilities, this certification requires a Secondary Education degree and 23 hours of project management training.
- Project Management Fundamentals (095015) – This course teaches the basic elements of sound project management and how to set up and execute a project. A 1-day course, it covers the basics and is for the person whose primary job is not project management.
- Project Management Essentials (095023) – This course teaches how to apply recognized practices of project management to manage a project from start to finish. A 3-day course, it is designed to provide the skills needed to be a successful project manager in today's rapidly changing world.
-
A dedicated project management professional with a certification or many years of experience: If this person does not have a Professional Project Management Certification, then this is the place to steer them. PMI’s Project Management Professional (PMP)® Certification requires a high school diploma or college degree along with 60 or 36 months (respectively) of experience leading projects and 35 hours of project management certification training.
If a person is already a PMP and is looking to add on with specializations, there are many offerings to explore within the PMI Certification framework. Because we are Logical Operations and our focus is on Emerging Technology, we offer “The Language of Emerging Technology for Project Managers” or ET4PM that teaches the basics of Emerging Tech that every project leader who is working in technology, such as AI or IoT, will need to understand.
The trick to selling project management training? Understand where the student is in his/her career!

October 2021 Instructor Excellence Award: Mia Gwyn
|
Mia Gwyn Computer Softwareand BusinessSkills InstructorNew Horizons LearningCenter of Las VegasConnect on LinkedIn |
|
|
Mia Gwyn is an award-winning Computer Software & Business Skills Instructor at New Horizons Learning Center.
Mia grew up traveling the world, living in different countries, and attending different schools. For half of her childhood, Mia was a stranger and “the new kid” in school. This experience exposed her to many different cultures and perspectives, and taught her to be adaptive, agile, and flexible. When Mia joined the workforce, she wasn’t exactly sure what she wanted to do and found herself in sales at New Horizons in Las Vegas, NV. “I never saw myself in sales, but the owner of that location noticed that I thrived at helping students with questions on Excel or troubleshooting PowerPoint. This owner noticed something innate in me and offered me a chance to teach…and the rest is history! 12 years of teaching, and all with New Horizons. I love it, and my early life experiences make me perfect for the job.”
Mia’s teaching credentials include Microsoft Office, SharePoint, Power Automate, QuickBooks, Crystal Reports, InDesign, Acrobat, Certified Associate Project Manager, Leadership…and the list goes on. Mia enjoys the fact that the work that she does is helping others improve in their work and in their lives. “I love teaching because I genuinely love those Eureka moments that students have – a moment where what they learned becomes exactly what they needed to know to make life easier or to make work more efficient…or the fact that they realize they actually enjoy or understand something that at first seemed daunting.” Mia likes to know that, in her own small way, she is helping improve their lives.
Mia loves teaching in any modality, which includes Virtual ILT. “I think online classes have suffered an ill-begotten reputation of being worse than ‘in-person’ training because, in its infancy, online training was not as developed and sophisticated as it is now.” Mia strongly believes that even though virtual training requires different techniques and tactics as a teacher, if it’s done properly, the virtual class is far more effective than in-person training. “It’s less expensive, it provides a flexibility that in-person doesn’t, it reaches a wider breadth of people, and, if done properly, it can still be engaging and hands-on. I personally love teaching online and having the chance to change the world’s perception of virtual training one student at a time!”
So, what’s next for Mia? Well, she’s had 12 years to hone and fine-tune her skills in a variety of settings and circumstances. So now she’s ready to “train the trainer”. “I want to be in a position where I can help other instructors, at any level, improve their techniques or find ways to simplify the process. I want to help my fellow instructors live, love, and last in this career.”

October 2021 Instructor Excellence Award: Patrick von Schlag
Patrick von Schlag is an ITIL Expert, Service Management Consultant, and thought leader. He began his career working in technical support for a pharmaceutical company, transitioned to doing the same for a software company, and was a substantial contributor at a U.S.-based, global training company for several years. In 2002, Patrick went on to run a consulting training organization for most of his career where he taught best practices, and now is the President at Deep Creek Center.
After spending just a few minutes with Patrick, you will “feel” his dedication to helping his clients adopt IT Service Management frameworks, models, and quality systems. Patrick is a respected author, instructor, and consultant with expertise in IT Service Management, Project Management, Agile Practices, and Information Security and IT Governance. Patrick is sought after for his training programs that cover process structures, strategic planning, service design, change management, and operational improvements.
When asked how he got into teaching, Patrick talks about his love for teaching which he attributes to the mentors he has had throughout his career. “I have been very fortunate to have good mentors and good people guide me in my career. It’s important with all of the stuff we do, to provide some functional context as to ‘why this matters’ in the minds of our client.” Patrick frames one question for many of his clients and asks it again and again --- “So what?”. “For every framework, there lies the question, ‘Well, why do I care about this?’, or ‘Why does my customer care about this?’, or ‘How does this help me in my career to serve my customers more effectively and get better results?’” Great teachers, like Patrick, don’t just teach material, they teach how to think!
Virtual teaching became an imperative this past 20 months, but Patrick was ready for it as he embraced it long ago. “I ran my first set of virtual classes in the 1990s back when we were still supporting 9600 baud modems, so virtual teaching is not a new thing for me.” But Patrick does acknowledge that virtual teaching now is different because it is the norm. “More organizations are further and further dispersed, and it is very difficult to find locations and facilities and time and money (for air travel and hotels) which are necessary to bring people together for a training program.” There are challenges with virtual training, for sure, but Patrick realizes that the positives outnumber the negatives. “It’s much more cost effective and more people can now access training programs. Virtual is a good trade off to be able to serve more students because the clients can spend their dollars on providing excellent education instead of travel.”
Looking ahead, Patrick is excited about the future for Cybersecurity training. He has been involved in the rollout of learning programs for the NIST Cybersecurity Framework and says, “Cybersecurity risk management is front page news everyday now for a variety of reasons. I am excited to help organizations move beyond a technical view of cybersecurity to thinking about it in the context of business risk and identifying and prioritizing investments, so they get the most optimal results.”

Featured CertNexus Certified Artificial Intelligence (CAIP) Candidate: Abdullah Alarifi
We recently spoke with Abdullah Alarifi, Economic Specialist at the Saudi Data & AI Authority (SDAIA), and recent CertNexus Certified Artificial Intelligence Practitioner (CAIP) candidate about what led him to take the next step in earning a credential in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning.
1. What was your motivation in pursuing a credential in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning? I was always fascinated by what Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning can do and its potential as well as how it's used for solving business, so I wanted to make sure that I have a good grip on it by pursuing a credential in AI/ML.
2. What was it about CAIP that resonated with you in comparison to other programs? I was drawn to CertNexus CAIP because I wanted to pursue a professional certificate in AI/ML that is inclusive and covers the main aspects of data analytics using an AI/ML framework that is both theoretical and practical. CAIP covers all of that very well.
3. How did you prepare for the certification exam? I prepared for the CAIP certification exam mainly by the CertNexus Certified Artificial Intelligence Practitioner Specialization on the Coursera platform, as well as my own independent research.
4. Can you tell us more about your organization and your role? SDAIA's mission is to unlock the value of data as a national asset to realize Vision 2030's aspirations. We will do this by setting the national data and AI strategy and overseeing its execution through harmonized data policies, data analytics, and insights capabilities, and continuous data and AI innovations. My role at the organization is to develop economic indexes that measure a certain economic performance and deliver it to decision-makers. I also conduct macro- and microeconomic research and analyses that require the study of economic structure, inflation, unemployment, and other public policies.

Meet Christina Dwyer
When I was younger, I was so eager to work I started volunteering and shadowing with whatever companies would have me. My first “real job” was in retail, and from there, I have been non-stop, working several jobs at once, and in all different industries and roles, with an insatiable urge to continue to experience more. From ages 16-22, I held positions in retail, restaurants, and guerilla/field marketing. When I graduated from college (2009), I connected with someone in the film production industry in my area and booked film production gigs for commercials, webisodes, as well as feature and short films for about 10 years. Examples of some of the positions that I held on set were location manager, talent coordinator, and production office coordinator. Between and/or concurrently with these gigs, I would work under my DBA as an operations/marketing consultant for local small businesses. More recently, in 2018, I joined iHeartMedia Radio full-time as an on-air producer, where I produced two live radio talk shows for about two years. The opportunity with LO came to me through a friend that currently works here, and the rest is history! I still work nights and weekends in radio, where I produce the on-air broadcasts of local sporting events.
I was brought on to the LO team as an Account Manager for the Project Management Institute’s Authorized Training Partner (ATP) program. I manage over 100 accounts of my own but have been responsible for onboarding well over 300 of the current ATPs in the program. The majority of my accounts are based overseas and have given me perspectives I wouldn’t have had otherwise, especially while going through a global pandemic. In addition to onboarding, I execute account management activities and provide ongoing support. Having connected with so many big players in the project management industry, I’ve had the unique opportunity to learn about the intricacies of the PMP training industry all over the world.
What I like most about LO is the collaborative team environment. I enjoy the fact that we’re all threaded together by one commonality - the whole of LO - but all have different tasks and positions. I feel like LO is a great place to gain experience within different types of projects and industries “under one roof,” and that’s rare to find.
A fun fact about me is that for the past five years, I have been a competitive powerlifter and have placed top 3 at all 5 meets I participated in. I am currently on a hiatus from the sport and am taking time to focus on learning more about nutrition. I also love to blog, read, review CBD brands, share memes, and create online content for my social media networks - in my free time.
