Public Officials, Business Leaders and Cybersecurity Experts Gather at “Two Steps Ahead: Protect Your Digital Life” Event to Educate Businesses and Consumers On Ways to Stay Safer and More Secure Online
November 20, 2015 Rochester, NY

The National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA), a non-profit public-private partnership focused on helping all digital citizens stay safer and more secure online, is coming to Rochester Institute of Technology with its STOP. THINK. CONNECT. Two Steps Ahead: Protect Your Digital Life Tour to educate consumers and businesses about adopting simple security measures like Two-Step Authentication into their everyday lives.

The event, which takes place on December 8th at Rochester Institute of Technology SLA Building (2nd floor Rooms 2210 - 2240) 111 Lomb Memorial Drive, is part of a national tour to spread the word about activating easily implemented security features, like Two-Step Authentication, available on many of the web’s most popular sites. Hon. Joseph D. Morelle, Majority Leader, New York State Assembly, will open the event with remarks and the morning will feature a hands-on demonstration showing attendees how to improve their security on sites like Google, Facebook, Microsoft, LinkedIn and financial institutions and a panel discussion with local consumer protection and cybersecurity experts.

Lack of consumer adoption of good password practices continues to create problems. The good news is more Internet sites are implementing additional safety features that can help computer users add another layer of security to their accounts. These features go by many names, including Two-Step Authentication. The process is simple and requires login approvals using a variety of methods, including SMS texts to a mobile device, or random one-time use password generators. The goal is the same, allowing only authorized people to access an account. Additionally, NCSA has created an educational and entertaining video – in simple, memorable language – that walks viewers through the process http://stopthinkconnect.org/2stepsahead.

“It’s time to shift our viewpoint and ‒ literally ‒ get “two steps ahead” on Internet security by changing our position from one dominated by vulnerability and risk to focusing on taking action by using Two–Step Authentication and creating a culture of cybersecurity,” said Michael Kaiser executive director at NCSA. “We can do this by working together and using new security tools to build a safer, more secure and trusted Internet. Utilizing all available security measures and understanding the consequences of actions and behaviors online is the key message underlying the STOP. THINK. CONNECT. campaign. ”

“The World Economic Forum maintains cyber security as one of the top five global risks, and it has been ranked as a top concern in federal chief information officer surveys. It is a growing threat, and the first step to protecting ourselves is to educate ourselves,” said Majority Leader Joseph D. Morelle. “That is why I am proud to partner with the National Cyber Security Alliance to help community members become more aware and develop the skills necessary to protect our public and private sectors from evolving cyber threats.”

"Research has repeatedly shown that most security breaches start with human error. This event will highlight many simple steps people can take live a safer personal and professional 'digital life'” said Bill Rosenthal, CEO of Logical Operations and an event sponsor.

The event will include remarks from Assemblyman Morelle and the following:

  • William W. Destler, President, Rochester Institute of Technology
  • Bill Rosenthal, CEO, Logical Operations
  • Warren Clark, President & CEO Better Business Bureau of Upstate New York
  • FBI Special Agent, Buffalo Division Cyber Squad
  • Bo Yuan, Ph.D., Associate Professor and Chair Department of Computing Security Rochester Institute of Technology
  • Michael Kaiser, Executive Director, National Cyber Security Alliance
  • Kristin Judge, Director of Special Projects, National Cyber Security Alliance

The event will run from 9am-11am and registration is free and open to the free, but space is limited.  “We want to thank all our partners who helped make the event in Rochester a success,” Kaiser said.
