I love staying on top of the current events as well as the industries we serve with our training courses and materials. Here are my five takeaways from thought leaders on ways the world is likely to change due to the COVID-19 pandemic (along with my own thoughts, of course):
- According to Professor Scott Galloway of NYU, Elite Universities will put a lot of their classes online and some small schools may shut down. He predicts that similar to other categories, there will be a flight to quality and a concentration of power among a small number of educational brands. This will mean that in order to stay competitive in the training market, you’re going to need to be agile, provide online training through virtual instruction, and have the courses your students are asking for. With regionalized locality disappearing, you need to put your best foot forward and offer online, virtual instruction on in-demand topics.
- Mark Cuban on Twitter predicts 10-20 companies are being started right now that are going to change the world. This coincides with the rapid rise in emerging technologies and the need right now to be creative and think outside the box. I can make an analogy to the space race of the 1960s. We had a high-pressure situation, a short timeline, and things that had never been done before. In normal circumstances, it might have taken us 30 years to build out the Apollo program, but we went from Sputnik in 1957 to Apollo 11 landing on the moon in 1969: just twelve years! Innovation often happens fastest when our collective backs are pressed against the wall.
- Tyler Cowen of George Mason University believes sustained unemployment for many is likely, as they wait for their old jobs to come back, even though they won’t. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed many flaws inside of old business models. Businesses are now seeing how they can operate with lower staffing, work from home models, and utilizing data science and artificial intelligence to help with their labor shortage. Those are not going to end when the pandemic is over. Millions of individuals will need retraining in new job categories to become employable again.
- Yuval Noah Harari of Hebrew University of Jerusalem believes that governments will put an increased emphasis on biometric surveillance. This is going to take the privacy discussion to a whole new level. What are we willing to give up in order to have this never happen again? Will we allow more open access to our medical records? Cameras that can perform facial recognition but also scan body temperature. Where is the line? What are you willing to give up in order to lower the chances of another pandemic?
- Ezekiel Emanuel of UPENN believes we will see an increase in telemedicine. The world is learning how to do things remotely. Medicine is just the start. Personally, I’ve discovered many more local restaurants through my search for takeout. Being able to pull up, have food put in my car, and leaving immediately appeals to many. It has also forced more restaurants to beef up their web presence. These are services they never would have provided previously, and they are services that require new skill sets.
