Jedi Jon here,

These are unprecedented times we are living in. With so much uncertainty surrounding our careers, the economy, and our personal wellbeing, it can be maddening to figure out what you should and shouldn’t be doing.

Here is what you should be doing: getting a certification. Let me tell you why certifications matter more than ever right now.

  1. No matter when the world returns to a sense of normal, the economy is going to be forever changed by these events. Businesses will now have blueprints for remote work environments, they will be looking to add talent that may live outside of their traditional hiring radius, and the best and the brightest will rise to the top. Recruiters are going to be scrambling to find top-shelf talent and the easiest way to differentiate yourself is by having a certification or several in your chosen field.
  2. Businesses are going to be looking to adopt technologies that will help them be more agile. Many of those technologies are new, and people with the skillsets to use them are rare. There are particularly large skills gaps already in Cybersecurity and Data Science, and a growing gap is emerging in the coding world. The skills gap is only going to continue to widen as organizations embrace new technologies and transition into the 4th Industrial Revolution.
  3. This is hopefully a once in a lifetime event, but that doesn’t mean it should go to waste. The number one reason most people don’t pursue further certification or training at their job is because they simply don’t have the time to do so. You should take advantage of any free time you have right now to get the certifications that can help you on the other side of this.

You have a chance now to prepare yourself for the next ten years and beyond by staying ahead of the curve. I believe the best certifications are ones that speak to specific skillsets and are validated by industry professionals. Look for certifications that test on actual job skills and explore many of the new emerging technologies on the market.

You’ve got the time. You’ve got the talent. Get your certifications while you have this opportunity.
