ITIL® Helps to Control the Centrifugal Force of IT
December 15, 2016 by Bill Rosenthal

Any experienced executive will tell you that it is a major challenge of management to control the centrifugal forces at work in an organization — to make sure that the parts are contributing to the organization’s mission rather than going off on their own.

Where is the centrifugal force greatest? In many organizations, it’s IT. In IT, it’s especially easy to displace the organization’s mission with a project mission. The analysts and programmers who are developing say, a new reporting system can become so preoccupied with the reporting system’s needs that they lose awareness of the business’s needs. I don’t have any statistics on it, but I suspect this one of the principal reasons for the failure of IT projects.

It’s also the reason for ITIL®. ITIL®, which was once known as Information Technology Infrastructure Library, is a body of management practices that focus on aligning IT services with the needs of the business. Its processes, procedures, tasks, and checklists give practitioners ways to identify, measure, and improve the contribution of IT services to the larger organization. Training in ITIL® practices helps empower IT teams to deliver better value and services to their business by aligning IT service delivery with the needs of the company and IT users.

ITIL®, in other words, controls the centrifugal force to which IT is naturally subject. It also harnesses IT to support business change, transformation, and growth. It’s no wonder that over the last 30 years, ITIL® has become the most widely accepted approach to IT service management in the world. More than 1.5 million exams for ITIL® certification have been administered worldwide. For a brief introduction to the ITIL® community, check out this page at the website of Axelos, which owns ITIL® and has produced a video called “ITIL in 100 Seconds.”
